In case you were not fortunate enough to make it to Vegas here is the next best thing – AU Virtual

Autodesk University opens today with a series of organizational meetings. The real event begins in earnest tomorrow. I was hoping to attend, but Matt Ball from V1 is going to be there and we are trying to be efficient about travel. Matt will be in a press conference with Carl Bass on Wednesday. I provided [...]
1. Should the focus be on technology or process?
2. I think process as technology can come and go.
3. The challenge is to integrate 3D technologies into the AEC process continuum such that we become more productive and our projects more energy efficient.
The primary sponsor for this annual event is the National Institute of Building Sciences – NIBS, but there are a number of other organizations co-locating at this venue including Ecobuild America, the buildingSMART Alliance, the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council – the list goes on and on. It all takes place in Washington, DC [...]
The AEC (UK) Standards Committee appears to be a model organization doing some very important grassroots, standards development work. Being involved with the development of a LiDAR data interoperability standard I know how challenging a task that can be. As the Committee notes, with respect to their recently published Phase 1 BIM Standard, this isn’t [...]
Some of you may be aware that over the past couple of years I have been heavily involved with 3D imaging technology in general. and 3D laser scanning to be more specific. I have a blog in that space, LiDAR News, which has been a fun, learning experience. Somewhere along the way I realized that [...]
I was encouraged to read today that in a recent survey conducted by Rebuilding Americas Infrastructure magazine that transportation respondents cited 3D modeling as having the greatest impact on the transportation and construction industry over the next 5 to 10 years. I don’t feel quite so far out on that limb anymore.
In the previous post, [...]
I think that a primary role of this effort should be to define and advance the 3D AEC technology agenda. As we are doing this we need to hold the key players and influencers accountable for making this happen. For this to have any impact I need your help to build significant grassroots support. I look forward to working with all of you to accomplish this important task.
I can’ t think of a better place to start this journey than with this report – Innovating for Better Buildings. Developed by two of the leading organizations in this arena – Nth Power and Fraunhofer USA, the authors are Brian Walsh, Bryan Urban and Sebastian Herkel.
I am very pleased to be launching this new blog in association with Jeff Thurston and Matt Ball at Vector1 Media.
The name of the blog pretty much says it all in terms of focus and interests.
I think the next decade will be seen as the “3D Decade” by the AEC industry.
Welcome. I am not [...]
