Is 3D GIS About to Revolutionize Visualization?

The develÂopÂment and release of 3D GIS is a major step forÂward into the future. It will undoubtÂedly cause a stir, sevÂeral peoÂple to scratch their heads and unleash a wave of new thinkÂing that we have not expeÂriÂenced in the geoÂcomÂmuÂnity for quite some time. It will cross disÂciÂplines, open doors and stir the pot of conÂtented indiÂvidÂuÂals who thought we had gone as far as we could go. VisuÂalÂizaÂtion is poised to sky rocket in terms of activÂity due to new ways for interÂpretÂing probÂlems, underÂstandÂing their nature and repÂreÂsentÂing their interÂacÂtions. Is 3D GIS about to revÂoÂluÂtionÂize visualization?

In some ways we have setÂtled into a comÂfort zone at the present moment in terms of geoÂviÂsuÂalÂiÂsaÂtion and mapÂping. While we enjoy placÂing locaÂtions with feaÂture inforÂmaÂtion on 3D globes, and that has helped milÂlions of peoÂple to engage in the mapÂping and graphÂics of the world, but an expanded world built on 3D objects that can be spaÂtial analysed and repÂreÂsented in new high resÂoÂluÂtion ways is about to unfold through 3DÂ GIS.
At the recent imagÂina 2010 conÂferÂence in Monaco, France sevÂeral speakÂers and exhibitors spoke about and expressed issues that are 3D in nature and sevÂeral of them already accept we are into the next step — 3D visuÂalÂizaÂtion and 3D worlds. While the movie Avatar has grasped the minds of movie-goers, 3D buildÂing inforÂmaÂtion modÂels (BIM) served through iPods, delivÂered through interÂacÂtive disÂplays and analysed with spaÂtial analyÂsis tools for safety appliÂcaÂtions are just a few of the posÂsiÂbilÂiÂties ahead.
Through 3D GIS we will be able to look at interÂsecÂtion analyÂsis (theÂmatÂiÂcally) from a mulÂtiÂtude of angles. There is a likeÂness to the work that medÂical imagÂing speÂcialÂists have been able to do arrivÂing into the hands of terÂriÂtory and landÂscape interÂested indiÂvidÂuÂals and orgraniÂsaÂtions. In turn GPS is also about to see greater growth as 3D GIS picks up speed and peoÂple begin to realise the imporÂtance of 3D coorÂdiÂnates and their power to fuel new map and visual cartographies.
We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface.
An exploÂsion of activÂity surÂroundÂing our underÂstandÂing of culÂture, hisÂtory and change will arrive with 3D GIS through analyÂsis, but it is visuÂalÂiÂsaÂtion that will be the voice to the thoughts, images and expeÂriÂences that 3D GIS unleashes, forms and creates.
I’m not conÂvinced that one giant model is about to emerge, instead, I would see thouÂsands upon thouÂsands of indeÂpenÂdent pieces of inforÂmaÂtion inteÂgrated in real-time and near-real-time expeÂriÂences. Recently I had the opporÂtuÂnity to see French researchers explorÂing the use of visuÂalÂizaÂtion tablets built on gyroÂscopes that show new images as they walked through churches — the images disÂplayÂing the hisÂtorÂiÂcal past and linked to every head turn. This being a fusion of hisÂtory, GIS and visualisation.
There is a growÂing interÂest in the design and artisÂtic qualÂiÂties emergÂing from 3D imagery. Ethics in their use is on the agenda, and probÂaÂbly one topic geo-professionals ought to conÂsider as they begin to explore 3D GIS and 3D visuÂalÂiÂsaÂtion going ahead as it aligns with busiÂness modÂels and the sale of prodÂucts and services.
3D GIS is about to cause change. These changes are going to be very excitÂing and will cause us to look at everyÂthing we have been tryÂing to underÂstand in 2D, in new ways. New analyÂsis will touch on robotÂics and become much more assoÂciÂated with realÂity. Yet, we will also tread a line a between realÂity and the non-real and that boundÂary alone has shifted and will shift further.
Where will it go next?

2010-02-09 17:11:08 | Joseph Young - Fragmentation and growthJeff, Mobile 3D is on the verge of strong growth again. Looking at the mobile platforms (iPhone, Android, Palm), you can see the shift towards 3D again. This time with embedded graphics chips. These will allow immersive 3D GIS to be a viable solution for the masses. At PixelActive, we've seen a variety of customers interested in CityScape and believe that there are many applications for 3D environments. The market will grow in many directions and the leaders will consolidate, leading to a 3D standard that will eventually dominate the market.
