Brazilian president Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva launched a renewed mapping project for the Amazon by the the Operationa and Management Center of the Amazonian Protection System (CENSIPAM). The effort includes the evaluation and monitoring of deforestation, lightening detection and meteorology using geoprocessing and remote sensing.

CENISPAM uses aerial platforms to fly synthetic apertura radar, hyperspectral, mulitpspectral and optical infrared. The use of these sensors, and the update of mapping efforts, aim to improve the proper sustainability of the country’s forest resources.
