Bicycle CityI learned of an interesting effort to build a car-free Bicycle City in the United States. One of the coordinators told me that the principal contributor had recently sold a business and has had the dream for a long time. With initial funding secured, they’re currently scouting sites with plans to announce the location soon.

Bicycle City is an environmentally responsible, ‘high-tech, high-touch’ place to live and work for this century. It is a planned community for people that want something original and better. The first of many such planned communities will likely to be in the southern or southwestern USA such as South Carolina, Tennessee, Arizona or New Mexico.

I heard extensively about Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) and other mobility tied to carbon issues at Ecocity. The non-sustainable pressures that the car has placed on urban design is dramatic, down to the impact that road surfaces place on the environment. The day may come in our lifetime where we rid the planet of at least half of its cars.
