A report from the government indicate that deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon have dropped nearly 50 percent from August 2008 to July 2009. The National Institute for Space Research analyzed satellite imagery and found that 7,008 square kilometers were cleared, which is the lowest rate since monitoring began in 1988.

The government credited aggressive monitoring and enforcement for the decline, as well as the promotion of sustainable practices. Satellite images are credited as making a big impact in effective enforcement.
