This Friday, June 5, is World Environment Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to raise environmental awareness and promote public action for the environment. To mark this event, a new film titled HOME by director Yann Arthus-Bertrand will be distributed globally for free at movie theaters, on television in France, on DVD and on the Internet.

HOME is a feature-length film that explores man’s impact on the planet with film shot from above in more than 50 countries. The effort is inline with Arthus-Bertand’s previous work developing the Earth From Above book and exhibition. The film has been in development for two years as part of the outreach effort of Arthus-Bertand’s GoodPlanet organisation, and is being supported by the French multinational company PPR (makers of PUMA and other brands).

Arthus-Bertand was officially designated as the United Nations Environment Program Goodwill Ambassador (UNEP) this April and he also received the ‘Earth Champion’ award for his commitment towards the environment and his work on public environmental awareness.

You can see where the film is being screened via a Google Maps mashup that also encourages you to self organize a viewing.
