Sense Networks is a new startup based in New York that is leveraging location data for predictive analytics. The company’s Citysense application aggregates cell-phone and taxi GPS data to create a heat map of hot spots of activity across a city. The service is currently available in San Francisco and will launch in New York soon, with the initial application available on Blackberry devices, with an iPhone application in the works.
What’s new about Citysense is the anonymity and aggregated view of crowds that helps people connect with like-minded groups. Users of the system can decide whether they want to be tracked by the application or not. Behavioral patterns of students, business people and tourists can be gleaned from the activity.
The company also has a business oriented service called Macrosense that is geared toward helping companies understand consumer behavior. With both services, the company strongly advocates for privacy of individuals, emphasizing that aggregate data provides valuable intelligence.
