EPA Releases Enforcement Actions with Map Interface
environmental monitoring, geovisualization December 29th, 2009Every year the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency releases information about enforcement actions and cases against polluters throughout the country. This year the details of code enforcement actions, and criminal cases prosecuted, are presented via an online interactive map.
The interface allows you to pick actions for air, water, land, criminal and cross-media infractions that are displayed via a Google Maps mashup. The interface also provides the ability to look back in time, with the display of data for each year back to 1999, however you can’t accumulate this data to look more than one year at a time.
“In fiscal year (FY) 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency’s enforcement and compliance program concluded civil and criminal enforcement actions requiring polluters to invest an estimated $5.4 billion to reduce pollution, clean up contaminated land and water, achieve compliance and fund environmentally beneficial projects. Civil and criminal defendants committed to reduce pollution by approximately 570 million pounds annually once all required controls are fully implemented.”
In 2009, the agency opened 387 new environmental crime cases, which is the largest number of cases, and recovered $371 million in settlements, the largest fund recovery in agency history.
