A “Memories of Columbia” exhibit will mark the fifth anniversary of the space shuttle Columbia accident. The exhibit has been organized by the Columbia Regional Geospatial Service Center in Nacogdoches and the Columbia Memorial Museum to tell the story of East Texas’ response to the disaster.

The Columbia Regional Geospatial Service Center came together after the Columbia disaster from college labs whose students and faculty members created maps that helped in the recovery efforts. Field workers recovered more than 80,000 pounds of shuttle debris (almost 40 percent of the shuttle’s weight) according to government reports.

The exhibit includes reproductions of the maps used in the response and GPS equipment used in the field. The exhibit also includes a model of the shuttle, a NASA exhibit documenting the development of space flight and a display from Lockheed Martin about the next generation of shuttles.
