There’s news today that a disabled American spy satellite may hit the Earth. Satellite watchers speculate that the craft is an imagery satellite built by Lockheed Martin and launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in December 2006. The satellite lost contact with ground controllers shortly after reaching orbit. It’s orbit has slowly been decaying since then, and it is now a matter of weeks before it falls out of orbit. There’s some concern about where it might land, and the potential for environmental contamination from the fuel and materials.
