An ambitious international expedition is being mounted to survey the mountains in East Antarctica as part of the International Polar Year (IPY). The in-depth survey aims to uncover the geological origins of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet by thoroughly exploring the Gamburstev subglacial mountains, and there’s hope to uncover ice that is more than 1.2 million years old in order to further unfold past climate change.

Scientists, engineers, pilots and support staff from British Antarctic Survey (BAS), USA, Germany, Australia, China and Japan will sepnd two and a half months on the project in two deep-field science camps with the support of nine aircraft. Two of thsoe aircraft will be equipped with ice-penetrating radar, gravimeters and magnetic sensors.
