Jane Lubchenco, a professor at Oregon State University, and a marine scientist widely known for her work on overfishing and climate change, has been selected by President-elect Barack Obama to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, according to this The Washington Post story.

“Lubchenco, a conservationist who has devoted much of her career to encouraging scientists to become more engaged in public policy debates, is also a vocal proponent of curbing greenhouse gases linked to global warming.”

Lubchenco would be the first woman to head the agency, which is central to climate change policy.
