There’s a nice overview of GeoChronos in International Science Grid This Week. GeoChronos is a web portal that will launch soon that is designed to help Earth observation scientists harness the grid and social networks in order to make discoveries. The web portal aims to help scientists share data and scientific applications, and to collaborate more effectively. The portal is being developed by the Grid Research Centre at the University of Calgary along with the Center for Earth Observation Science at the University of Alberta.

Among the components of the site is the Vegetation Spectral Library, a collection of spectral signatures of different vegetation and landcover types from around the world. The site is powered by Elgg, an open source social networking platform.

By spring 2010, scientists will be able to use the GeoChronos beta to upload applications and data to the cloud, and run interactive analyses and visualizations using computational resources provided via a grid.
