Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has been working to develop an online application to help monitor deforestation in the developing world in preparation for the Copenhagen climate conference. I previously reported on this work back in October, and today there’s a detailed Blog post from Google about what has been created.

  • The site adds the ability to browse time series satellite imagery to view forestry change over time.
  • They’ve added the scientific analysis of the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System (CLASlite) in order to analyze forest cover change.
  • they’ve harnessed the Google cloud to provide a high-performance satellite imagery-processing engine

The site is offered as a not-for-profit service to a small set of partners for testing purposes. They indicate that they’ll make it more widely available in the coming year.
