Roman Nurik, a developer at Google, created an interactive conference map for the recent Google I/O 2009. His multi-level map of Moscone Center in San Francisco that was featured in a kiosk at the event included schedules of talks in specific rooms and some points of interest. Now that the event is over, the interface is being used to navigate all the videos recorded during the event, with video links appearing in the rooms where they occurred, and organized chronologically by the times they were presented.

Roman has been kind enough to open source the map, and to provide details on the steps he took to create this map. He developed this using his 20% time, and has provided a nice service that other events can replicate.

As a recovering conference organizer, I think this is a great way to present conference details, and to make the conference live on with a sense of place. Next steps in my mind would be to take this out of the kiosk and onto the mobile devices and laptops that everyone is using at the event. And how about some live Twitter streams during the event to allow other attendees to get a sense of the hot sessions as they’re happening.
