Join the Dialogue on the Role of IT for Economic Recovery
infrastructure, mapmaking, policy, spatial analysis April 27th, 2009A new website has been created to discuss the role of IT to make Recovery.gov a better place for the public to monitor the expenditure and use of recovery funds. The National Dialogue provides a place for individuals to submit ideas, and to view and vote on those ideas submitted by others. The challenge of integrating, tracking and displaying data from thousands of federal, state and local entities is a huge one. The online dialogue is structured for input on four different areas — data collection, data storage/warehousing, data analysis and visualization, and website design.
Searching on the keyword GIS reveals a number of individual responses from citizens and vendors:
- Add Mapping and Geographic Analysis to Recovery.gov (submitted by ESRI)
- Use of Geographic Information Systems (submitted by jtmac from Lincoln, NE)
- Make Public Data Available to the Public with Web Services (submitted by Christi Stevens from the Louisville Metro Government)
- GIS Based Web Portal (submitted by ajaynair consultant)
The submission by ESRI is by far the most comprehensive of the above ideas, but all have elements with merit. The importance of this exercise is to show that there’s broad interest in seeing GIS as part of the solution, and as a critical component to the transparency of our government. As such, please be sure to go online and vote on these ideas, add comments, or add your own voice. The site is open for comment through Sunday, May 3, 2009.
