Last-Minute Deregulation
climate change, energy, policy October 31st, 2008Like the Clinton administration before him, President Bush is likely to end his time in office approving a large number of new rules. The Washington Post reports today that there are as many as 90 new regulations being considered, and many are aimed at easing environmental regulations.
“The new rules would be among the most controversial deregulatory steps of the Bush era and could be difficult for his successor to undo. Some would ease or lift constraints on private industry, including power plants, mines and farms.”
One of the most controversial of these rules that are being considered is an easing of emissions limits for power plants. The new rule would allow plants to match the highest levels of emissions produced by that plant, which would add tons of carbon into the air and worsen global warming. There will be a public comment period for each of these regulations, but the time window will be short.
