Lockheed Martin Cuts 800 Space Systems Jobs
global change, imagery August 18th, 2009Lockheed Martin plans to cut 800 jobs in its space systems division by the end of the year in its Denver and Sunnyvale, Calif. facilities. The cuts amount to 4.5 percent of the company’s 140,000-person workforce, and come as a result of flat budgets at NASA and the Defense Department. Lockheed Martin is the world’s largest defense contractor, and they produce space-flight systems and satellites for the GPS constellation as well as meteorological and communications satellites in these facilities. They’re also a prime integrator of GIS technologies for large government projects, including the Environmental Protection Agency through the Remote Sensing Services contract.
Last month, Lockheed reported a 17% decline in second-quarter profit in its information-systems business. The revenue for its space systems unit was down 7%, and overall profit fell 16%.
