Mapping a Pedestrian-Friendly City
green, mapmaking, transportation December 27th, 2007There’s an interesting story in today’s Colorado Springs Independent about an effort to map the city’s sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps. This data wasn’t previously a part of the city’s GIS, but is critical in their effort to become more pedestrian friendly.
The story indicates that the city has spent a year and $30,000, working with college students, to capture this inventory using a combination of aerial imagery and street-level 360 degree views captured by a van that drove the city’s streets.
This detail is helping the city determine areas in need of update, prioritizing areas that need work first, and costing projects.
