There’s an interesting story in today’s Colorado Springs Independent about an effort to map the city’s sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps. This data wasn’t previously a part of the city’s GIS, but is critical in their effort to become more pedestrian friendly.

The story indicates that the city has spent a year and $30,000, working with college students, to capture this inventory using a combination of aerial imagery and street-level 360 degree views captured by a van that drove the city’s streets.

This detail is helping the city determine areas in need of update, prioritizing areas that need work first, and costing projects.
