Mayors Meet About Going Green
development, green November 3rd, 2007The U.S. Conference of Mayors met in Seattle, Wash. this week for the Climate Protection Summit. More than 100 mayors gathered to talk about ways to accelerate the response to global warming. To date 710 mayors have signed the Climate Agreement, a pledge to reduce their cities’ carbon dioxide emissions to the levels defined in the Kyoto Protocol (a document the U.S. Senate failed to ratify).
According to New York Times coverage the focus of the event can be summarized by a focus on, “Cities that are “walkable,†workable and livable add up to the “s†word: sustainable. Cities that are centered on people and public transit, not cars, and built to higher standards of energy efficiency will save money, hum with new development and create jobs to suit a greener way of life. ”
The gathering was addressed by President Bill Clinton, Al Gore and New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg. Videos of these presentations can be viewed online here.
