NOAA Director Urges More Scientific Study of Climate
climate change, environmental monitoring May 14th, 2008Conrad C. Lautenbacher, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), spoke yesterday about the creation of a National Climate Service. NOAA is already in charge of weather research and forecasting for the federal government, but the new alignment that Lautenbacher proposes would, “separate the science from the political furball of policy.”
The current U.S. Climate Change Science Program brings together research from 13 government agencies. Lautenbacher’s proposal would create a more organized and scientific approach so that the data is less likely to be manipulated for opposing views. Lautenbacher’s hope is that a more rigorous scientific approach would help depoliticize the issue of climate change.
Apparently the White House has signed off on the idea of a climate service, and Lautenbacher will move to the next step of seeking funds to organize the new center in the 2010 budget.
