Public Cameras Beat Satellites to Detect Change
earth observation, environmental monitoring, imagery, sensor web January 15th, 2010An interesting post from Conservation Magazine discusses a project to tap public webcam for the study of the effect of climate change. The researchers compared two years worth of camera data from sites set up to monitor air quality and traffic with low-resolution satellite imagery in order to see which was better for assessing change. Not surprisingly, the cameras were deemed to have fewer low-quality days, because their images weren’t impacted by cloud cover.
