There’s a new option to find public transportation routes within many American cities. The website PublicRoutes.com provides directions services that feature mass transit routes as well as the best streets for walking.

The site launched in New York City more than a year ago, and now covers 37 U.S. cities. The site is delivered through standard web browsers as well as through mobile devices. In addition to transit directions, the site also offers city sightseeing guides and local attractions. Details help you take in noteworthy local attractions and offer guides to local restaurants, shopping, bars and clubs.

I look forward to using this feature in the future, as I’ve made a conscious effort to use public transportation for all future travels. I took the bus from the Seattle airport to downtown for the recent GITA Conference. I paid just $1.50 each way for the express service that took just 20 minutes. The pickup point at the airport was easy to reach, and the underground bus terminal in downtown Seattle was sleek and modern. My motivations for this public transit trip were many, including being cheap, wanting to travel like a local, and being more green. The trip was easily as fast as a cab, saved me more than $35 each way over cab fare, while reducing my carbon footprint.

I used the Public Transit feature in Google Maps to search the route and bus options. This was an easy exercise that made me feel comfortable and confident about the choice prior to arriving. I like the simple interface of PublicRoutes and look forward to exploring walking options on future visits to cities like San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
