The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) pulled together a list of top emerging technologies, and number nine on the list is remote sensing technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles and the satellites that are part of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The list also includes “greener” aviation technologies, alternative fuels and advanced space propulsion technologies, among others.

It’s good to see the recognition of remote sensing on the list. The “emerging technologies” moniker means that while the technology is mature, it’s impact is growing. I agree with this assessment that remote sensing has a great deal to offer in order to understand our dynamic planet.
