swissexperiment.jpgThe Swiss Experiment is a multidisciplinary consortium of scientists and environmental monitoring tools built on an advanced framework of data collection, data management and communications technology. The goal of the experiment is to help predict environmental changes in the Alps due to climate change.

The shared IT infrastructure is one of the compelling aspects of this experiment. Instead of distributed centers that access and monitor the data individually, there’s common data storage and management as well as a common analysis platform.

The project’s deployment of wireless technologies with a sensor web approach is an impressive advancement that’s well beyond proof of concept. I like how this group has highlighted that this technology wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago. But what I really find invigorating is the cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional IT framework that adds openness and far greater value to the collected data.

Microsoft Research is involved in the Swiss Experiment. They’re at the forefront of Sensor Web development as you may recall from my previous Blog post about the sensor web.
