The Earth After Us

by Matt Ball on October 6, 2008

There’s a new book by geologist Jan Zalasiewics titled, The Earth After Us, that takes the reader 100 million years into the future — after the human race is extinct — to see what remains of our presence. The book details how the impact of humanity will never leave our planet, and provides insight into the thought and research process of paleontologists and geologists to uncover a hidden past.

The book explores such questions as:

  • What kind of fossils will humans leave behind?
  • What will happen to cities, cars, and plastic cups?
  • How thick a layer will the ‘human stratum’ be?
  • Will it be obvious which species dominated the planet?

Central to the story’s extinction premise is the issue of climate change and mass extinction. The book provides an objective scientific account of our species relationship to our planet.
