After the Iridium satellite crashed with a dead Russian satellite in February, there’s been a concerted effort by the U.S. Strategic Command to better track all satellites and space debris. The debris poses a considerable threat to all satellites, particularly those that cannot be maneuvered, and hinders any launch mission into space.

Lt. General Larry James, commander of the U.S. Air Force Joint Functional Component Command for Space, spoke yesterday during a congressional hearing. He indicated that dozens of analysts and additional computer processors have been added to better track space junk. The goal is to track all 800 active maneuverable satellites by October 1.
